See "Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Prices" with Fellow UUs

Wal-Mart uses its market power to impoverish workers, take over communities, and create dependency on their "low prices". Other big box retailers are following suit. The goal of UUJEC’s 2005-2006 is to encourage UUs to take specific, powerful actions to prevent big box retailing from profiting from injustice.

Join in UUJEC’s action campaign to hold Wal-Mart and other big box retailers accountable! Over 120 UU congregations will be hosting at least one public screening of "WAL-MART: The High Cost of Low Price" the week (plus) of November 13th through the 20th. In the Northwest, 9 showings are scheduled. (See times and locations below.)

You can download UUJEC's Campaign Tool Box. The tool box contains multiple materials – fact sheet, UUJEC commentary, the “Not for Me” Pledge, strategies, and more.

You may still be able to sign up to host a showing. If it's too late to get the DVD, you may be able to borrow one from another host in your area.

And please let us know how your showing went – email coordinator at UUJEC-NW.org

Economic Justice Sunday at your congregation

The Northwest chapter of Unitarian Universalists for a Just Economic Community (UUJEC-NW) invites Northwest congregations to host an Economic Justice Sunday in support of UUJEC-NW's continuing growth and development in 2005-2006.

We are a membership organization. Economic Justice Sundays are the principal way for us to reach out and make our work known to UU congregations and receive their support for our work in return, in the form of memberships and/or donations. This support is critical to our growth and development - both in terms of members' involvement and funding for our programs and initiatives. The chapter receives the total of its annual budget from member contributions. Funding goes to build a learning network of UUS engaged in the work of economic justice. It supports network and resource development through funding of part-time staff. For more information contact us at coordinator@uujec-pnwd.org

Pacific Northwest District AGM

Please watch for our upcoming event at the 2006 Annual General Meeting of the PNWD-UUA.

Globalization Workshop at PNWD AGM (February, 2005)

Current Developments in Economic Globalization: Barbara Dudley, a past president of the National Lawyers Guild; former director of the Veatch Program; recently executive director of Greenpeace U.S.A.

We will be brought up to date on recent developments in the WTO, NAFTA, CAFTA, etc., and the implications of these developments. We will discuss alternative visions for sustainable economic development. Link the systemic issues of economic globalization with the political and cultural developments of the globalization of civil society. This presentation will be especially valuable to young adults who will deal with the issues and realities of globalization in all its forms throughout their lives.
